In a pastoral visit dedicated by His Excellency the Archbishop of Bogotá, Vicente Arbeláez in the month of November 1862, he left in the corresponding minutes severe criticism for the state of ruin in which the church was.



The parish priest Pineda, annoyed by the Archbishop's annotations, summoned a neighborhood meeting and it was decided to build a great temple all in carved stone. The first stone was laid on January 6, 1873 after the solemn high mass in honor of the patron god of Duitama.



The temple was finished by Father Cándido Quintero and completely finished in 1953 by consecrated on January 5 by the Nuncio of His Holiness Monsignor Antonio Samore with a pontificial mass celebrated according to the imposing and majestic ritual of that time consecrated the temple in honor of the Child God, eighty years after the laying of the first stone "

The Temple in carved limestone is composed of two lateral naves and a central one. It is shaped like a cross, has two chapels, one corresponds to the baptistery and the other is dedicated to the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. There are five altars: the Saint Lawrence patron of the Cathedral; that of the Child God patron of Duitama; the High Altar; that of the chapel of Santísimo and that of solio. The priest is made up of the altar of the solio, with stone carvings, central chair or the position of the Bishop; upholstered in red velvet with gold carvings, this separates the sacristy from the priest. In the center is the main altar, which consists of a marble table where religious services are performed. At the front, there are two marble lecterns that end in eagles with the two extended wings that serve as support for the books or liturgical documents.



Stained glass windows that represent different biblical aspects, placed at the height of the Priest, finished off in a lantern or upper dome, made of iron and concrete, finished in pañete and ivory paint and some gold moldings and plasterwork. The stone side walls provide illumination through semicircular openings covered with stained glass.
